Two Boots is a Cajun-Italian pizza restaurant group created in NYC’s East Village in 1987 by two indie filmmakers (Doris Kornish & Phil Hartman) and a local developer (John Touhey), who loved pizza & all things New Orleans – the two “boots” refer to the geographical shapes of Italy & Louisiana! Originally a full-service restaurant @ 37 Avenue A (btw E. 2nd & E. 3rd St), Two Boots has grown into a group of pizzerias with locations now in  New York, New Jersey and Nashville.

Over 60,000,000 slices later, our brand’s recipe remains the same: unique flavors, with many of our pizzas using our original cornmeal crust, topped with extraordinary ingredients; colorful spaces filled with murals, collages & mosaics; and a deep commitment to our communities.

It starts with our unique cornmeal crust: crispy, chewy, and definitely not your average New York slice. Then we add a piquant sauce that gives our slices a kick, and use creamy whole milk cheese from Galbani in upstate New York. And finally come our toppings – the best of the best, including Zoe’s all-natural cup & char pepperoni, Be-hive’s plant-based proteins and an array of Cajun ingredients like BBQ shrimp, andouille sausage and spiced crawfish that can bring Mardi Gras to your mouth any day of the week.

And because we’re Two Boots, our specialty pies have some personality. They’re inspired by NYC, music and movies, and celebrate the weirdos, second bananas and unheralded do-gooders we’ve loved since our East Village days. What other pizzeria has immortalized Meg from The White Stripes, futurist Buckminster Fuller, and Blaxsploitation crime-fighter Cleopatra Jones?

Absolutely. Grub Street has called us “Slice Joint Genius.” Enjoy it on the run, or hang inside the store and dig the colorful folk art decor – “a cross between a Quentin Tarantino movie and Pee-wee’s Playhouse” – while enjoying an eclectic playlist that can go from Big Maybelle to the Star Trek Theme to the Wu Tang Clan in the time it takes to eat a single slice of pizza.

Long before other pizzas began to feel obligated to serve vegan pizza, Two Boots was well-known as the go-to place for the variety, creativity and high quality of our vegan offerings. And every November, during International Vegan Month, we partner with a local vegan food vendor (like the soul food spot Nana’s A Vegan in the Bronx) to feature a unique pie of the month, with proceeds benefiting an appropriate pro-vegan organization (like the Institute for Animal Happiness).

Pizza may be our first love, but we also serve the World’s Best Garlic Knots (regular and Hot Knots), a variety of sliders (using the aforementioned Famous Knots), fresh salads, calzone and killer cookies.

Most locations also feature unique beverages like Boylan’s fountain drinks, Yerba Madre and Spindrift. And nothing washes down a Bayou Beast like an Abita beer, or pairs with a slice of Luisaida, like a Modelo. A line of fine canned wines, including Rose, Pino Grigio and Pinot Noir is also available.

“CHILDREN WELCOME,” was painted on our original store’s window from Day One. And we’ve nurtured several generations of kids and their parents at Two Boots. Yes! Our gluten-free crust – beloved by those gluten-sensitive, though not suitable for true celiacs – is available in two sizes, and can be customized to include any ingredients on our menu. 

Our goal at Two Boots is to feel like we’ve grown up through the cracks in the sidewalk in each of our communities, not landed from above like a space ship. Our neighborhood roots go deep: from the Two Boots Pizza Academy at the Lower Eastside Girls Club, to the Downtown Historic Plaque Program with the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation to the job training program with The Keswell School, we have a long history of not just feeding schools, non-profits and arts groups, but initiating programs that nurture us as much as our partner organizations. Two Boots has had an association with independent films since the beginning. No Picnic, written and directed by Two Boots Co-Founder Phil Hartman, and produced by Two Boots Co-Founder Doris Kornish, is considered an “indie classic,” and had a record-breaking run at NYC’s Film Forum in 2026. Doris has also made the documentary Not Nude Though, about the artist Rudy Burckhardt, and Phil wrote and directed a second feature, Eerie, starring Will Arnett & Felicity Huffman. Two Boots also presents an annual outdoor film festival, Movies In Tompkins, a quarterly screening series, BrickFlix, and for nearly a decade, owned and operated The Pioneer Theater, a single screen gem in the East Village.

Gay Pride is celebrated at Two Boots West Village with The isDuchess, actor Luis Guzman  the namesake for the East Village’s Luisaida, and Nashville has immortalized the great Kitty Wells with The Kitty, a hot chicken pizza featuring fiery fingers from the legendary Hattie B’s.
